The Building Department, along with the Code Enforcement Officer, has many responsibilities for the City. The major responsibilities include:

  • The enforcement of the City's Building Codes
  • The issuance and inspection of such permits as construction, sidewalks, driveways, curb cuts, fences and signs
  • The enforcement of the City's ordinances, which include complaints referencing trash and debris, unlicensed or non-operating vehicles, sidewalk snow removal and weed/grass cutting
  • Maintains all Building Department Records

As liaison to the Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals, the Building Department receives and reviews all applications or requests that are brought before each body.  For more information, and for minutes and agendas for each Board, click

The Planning Commission meets on the second Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., and the Zoning Board of Appeals meets on the fourth Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.  Their meetings are held at City Hall in the lower level.  Agenda will be posted when available or they can be obtained at City Hall.

 

 

PERMITS

Building and Zoning Compliance Permits are issued during normal business hours, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  For a list of when a permit is required, click on "REQUIRED PERMITS". Click on the SCHEDULE OF FEES for the various permit fees.  The City does not issue permits for electrical, mechanical or plumbing work.  These permits must be obtained through the State of Michigan, Bureau of Construction Codes and Fire Safety.  Please visit their website at www.cis.state.mi.us/bcc for more information.

 

To obtain a Building Compliance Permit application, click on Building/Zoning Compliance Permit ApplicationAn application along with the drawings of the proposed work must be submitted to the Building Department.  A review for building, safety and zoning compliance will be completed prior to a permit being issued.  Building permit fees are based on a square foot value of the project.  Applications may also be picked up in the Building Department Office during normal business hours.Â


INSPECTIONS AND ORDINANCES

Inspections are required for all construction projects.  Required inspections include footings/foundation inspections, rough framing inspections and final inspections.  Please call the Building Department at 810-653-2191 if you have any questions on when or what types of inspections are required for your construction project.  To request an inspection, call the Building Department a minimum of 24 hours in advance.
